L\u2019a\u00e9rogel est souvent appel\u00e9 \u201cfum\u00e9e solide\u201d ou \u201cgel de fum\u00e9e\u201d en raison de sa transparence, de sa l\u00e9g\u00e8ret\u00e9 et de son apparence semblable \u00e0 de la fum\u00e9e. Ce proc\u00e9d\u00e9, souvent appliqu\u00e9 \u00e0 des a\u00e9rogels fabriqu\u00e9s \u00e0 partir de compos\u00e9s organiques dissous dans des solvants tels que l\u2019\u00e9thanol ou l\u2019ac\u00e9tone, permet d\u2019extraire ces solvants et d\u2019obtenir un mat\u00e9riau solide et pur.
